Silicone Floats!

Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001

I have seen your posts on the 1800 list. Where did you get your information on the specific gravity of DOT 5? I believe it is lighter than water, but I wanted authoritative sites, manufacturer, etc. By the way, part of the preflight prep for light aircraft is to bleed the fuel tanks until only gas runs out. They are purging water that accumulates in them just like the master cylinder reservoir.

Do you have any information on the rumor that the Army has petitioned the SAE for a standard for removing DOT 5 from stored vehicles? I think I read that on the Brickboard, but didn't save it or remember incorrectly.

Thanks -- no hurry -- I will appreciate any reply.

Hello, Larry - My information on the specific gravity of DOT 5 brake fluid was purely intuitive until a few minutes ago, when I poured several ounces of water and DOT 5 brake fluid into a clear glass bud vase. The silicone fluid is very purple, and it is easy to see it floating on top of the water in the vase. I am able to add to the list of disadvantages of DOT 5 the fact that I couldn't find it at Pep Boys and had to go to another auto supply store to purchase a bottle to use for my experiment.

I have not heard anything concerning the Army and DOT 5. -Glenn.
